Recognize the Signs
Sleep disorders affect more than your rest — they impact your heart, mind, and daily life.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
Loud Snoring
loud snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, but not everybody who has untreated sleep apnea, snores loud. Snoring can be disruptive to sleep quality. Optimal sleep promotes better health.
Pauses in breathing during sleep
interruptions in breathing can cause drop in blood oxygen levels while sleeping and affect sleep quality and overall health. Untreated sleep apnea can be life-threatening to one’s health, even though the patient does not have any complaints.
Waking up gasping or choking
short awakenings after a choking sensation, coughing, or gasping for air. Even though it’s only for a few seconds, it causes catecholamine release, which is very dangerous for every system in our body.
Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
even though not everyone with untreated sleep apnea experiences feeling tired during the day, some people with untreated sleep apnea have daytime sleepiness, and fatigue. It’s due to lack of good quality sleep, and not getting enough restorative sleep that helps with feeling refreshed when waking up and wakefulness that lasts all day.
Waking with a dry mouth
dry mouth can be problematic for the health of your teeth and mouth. Even though dry mouth can be a side effect of many medications and a sign of dehydration, it can also be a sign of snoring and mouth breathing, while sleeping. Better health of your oral cavity ensures better overall health.
Restless sleep
restless sleep can be a sign of untreated sleep apnea, gastric reflux, pain/ ache, anxiety, or hormonal imbalance or certain ailment, and should not be taken lightly, because it can affect overall sleep quality.
Morning headaches
even though not everyone with untreated sleep apnea experiences morning headache, some people with untreatedsleep apnea wake up with morning headache that resolves after a few hours. After treating sleep apnea, sleep related headaches often resolve.
High blood pressure
untreatedsleep apnea can be a contributing cause to high blood pressure or resistant hypertension. If you are not responding well to medications for high blood pressure, make sure you are tested for sleep apnea.
Frequent Nighttime Urination
most people who are older or females after child birth, think frequent nighttime urination might be due to only bladder issues or age, but it can very well be due to untreated sleep apnea. It is due to catecholamine release (sympathetic, nervous system hormones/ stress hormone release), which can be a contributing factor to frequent urination, night sweats, restless sleep and more. If you have difficulty with your sleep quality and frequent nighttime urination, make sure to talk to your doctor, because it can be a sign of untreated sleep apnea.
Irregular heartbeat concerns
even though this doesn’t affect everyone, irregular heartbeat can be another sign of untreated sleep apnea in some people. Sometimes people wake up with elevated heartbeat that feels like waking up after a nightmare, or with anxiety; when in fact, it can be due to stress-hormones released because of untreated sleep apnea that can cause irregular, rapid heartbeat.
Trouble focusing or brain fog
disruption in sleep quality can cause cognitive symptoms like trouble focusing, or lack of clarity. Sometimes it feels like being more forgetful and if you are older, you might blame your age when in fact, it’s your sleep quality that causes this. Treating untreated sleep apnea can significantly improve this condition.
Heartburn
heartburn can be a sign of untreated sleep apnea. Those patients often complain of waking up with symptoms in the middle of night or in the morning. Gastric reflux can erode inside linings of the esophagus and cause gastroesophageal cancer, if untreated. Treating untreated-sleep apnea, can often significantly improve or resolve these symptoms.
Don't ignore the signs. Sleep apnea could be affecting your health and quality of life.

Meet Sheri Sameni, FNP-C
Sheri Sameni, FNP-C, is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who has been practicing in cardiology and sleep medicine since 2010, and full-time in sleep medicine since 2020. Her passion for sleep apnea stems from its strong connection to heart disease — often undiagnosed until it’s too late.
She has treated a wide range of sleep disorders, including insomnia, narcolepsy, REM behavioral sleep disorder, restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, and sleep apnea–related obesity. Sheri collaborates closely with American Board–certified sleep specialists for diagnostic testing, interpretation, and ongoing care.
Before specializing in sleep medicine, Sheri worked as a charge nurse in the cardiac telemetry department at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo (since 2006), following earlier experience with a California travel nursing agency and as a new graduate RN at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach.
Her mission is simple: inform patients about disease prevention and help reverse the early stages of illness — one patient at a time.

FAQ
Answers from sleep experts.
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a serious disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, reducing oxygen and disrupting restorative rest. Untreated, it raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, and chronic fatigue.
How do I know if I have a sleep disorder?
Common signs include loud snoring, daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, gasping at night, and trouble concentrating. A professional assessment is the only way to confirm a diagnosis.
What is a home sleep test?
A home sleep test is a comfortable, FDA-cleared device you wear overnight in your own bed. It measures breathing, oxygen, and heart rate to diagnose sleep apnea — no clinic stay required.
Is CPAP therapy right for me?
CPAP is the gold standard for moderate-to-severe sleep apnea. Our specialists help you find the right mask, settings, and ongoing support to make therapy comfortable and effective.
